Echo Area
Lyndon Cassell Photography
Port Alberni's echo area is our largest sports regions in the Valley. It is home to the Multiplex stadium, the Sports Complex, a track and field, many ball fields, a skateboard park, the local swimming pool, and much more. The area is also home to Echo park, a city owned property that includes the swimming pool, the public library, the city's museum, and other amenities such as spaces for public or private events. Close by is the regions high school (ADSS). Also in this neighborhood is the Kinsmen property that is utilized for large events such as the annual Fall Fair. This property also includes the city owned building, the Glenwood Center. also used during the Fall Fair and many other events. A new comer to one of the Kinsmen buildings is the Five Acre Social space. Horse buildings are a part of the Kinsmen's property and is used for horse events. Horses are a large part of the Valley and there are many horse training spaces, mostly in the Beaver Creek area.
The Echo Area is near the far North end of 10th Avenue. It consists of numerous sports fields and walking paths, the city operated Echo Park, which stands back to back with the Alberni District High School. Across from the high school is the track and field. Behind the track and field stands the grounds commonly referred to as the Fall Fair grounds. Just up the road from the track and field is the Alberni Valley Multiplex, home of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Junior B BCJHL hockey team. Next door to the multiplex is the Sports Centre. Next to that is NIC (North Island College).
Fields and Green spaces
The wide open fields in the echo area give you spectacular views of the sky line and what surrounds the Valley. In a 360 degree turn you can see Mt Arrowsmith, the Beaufort Range, the Glaciers towards Sproat Lake, and Copper Mountain. I've gone here take photos during such occasions as unbelievable sunrises and sunsets, spectacular cloud formations, air shows such as a fly over by the Snow Birds, ad much more. It's a favourite go to location because you are on higher ground that allows you to see further through the Valley.
Ball Fields
The softball diamonds are used continuously for many community leagues. These fields are also home to the largest softball event on Vancouver Island. Every Canada Day long weekend, Port Alberni plays host to the Okee Dokee tournament. Teams from all over for this fun filled event. The objective of the event is to raise money for charity. Throughout the year various charities benefit. Each night there is also live music. On average 80 teams enter the slow pitch tournament.
Echo Park
Echo Park is a city owned and operated property that offers many amenities for locals and visitors. It is home to the Alberni Valley Museum, the Valley's swimming pool, the public library, as well as the Parks and Recreation head offices. There are also rooms available for hosting public and private events such as weddings, fundraisers, and business activities.
